More attention to biotechnics

In this ancient and at the same time young field of activity for us, much has not yet been studied, it is not clear, it is controversial, five main aspects of this problem can be noted, on which the most serious disagreements are observed among zoologists and hunters: a clear and strict definition of the concept of "biotechnics" has not yet been developed; there is no consensus on the importance of biotechnics for hunting; biotechnical terminology causes a lot of controversy; endless debates continue as to whether biotechnics is a science or only a number of technical techniques that contribute to the conservation, prosperity and increase in the number of wild animals, and, finally, there is no unity of views regarding the value and usefulness of many specific biotechnical measures. These disagreements hinder the purposeful development of biotechnologies, disorient specialists and the hunting community, and hinder the implementation of the most important biotechnical measures.

And, undoubtedly, right now, when we and abroad have accumulated considerable experience in the practical implementation of biotechnical recommendations, it is time for a big conversation. However, in order for the conversation to be concrete, we first of all need to find out what biotechnical measures are currently being implemented in our country and to what extent. On this issue, as well as on some controversial aspects of biotech, which were mentioned above, we want to draw the attention of our readers.

We fully agree with N. K. Vereshchagin that the Great Soviet Encyclopedia gives an erroneous definition of the concept of biotech. Biotech, according to this definition, should be engaged in the protection and breeding of useful animals and birds, taking into account hunting and commercial animals and forecasting their numbers, hunting techniques, ways and forms of organization of hunting, etc. This interpretation of the concept of biotech greatly expands the scope of its competence and identifies it with hunting. It obscures the meaning of the main tasks in the field of biotechnics, does not contribute to the purposefulness of biotechnical research, deprives biotechnics of its subject of research.

N. K. Vereshchagin defines biotech as "a set of techniques aimed at the prosperity of wild animals." In our opinion, this is generally the correct definition of the concept of biotech, it should be clarified somewhat, since, firstly, it does not say anything about biotech as a science, and secondly, acclimatization measures are not provided for.

We propose the following definition of this concept: biotechnics is a science that studies the possibilities of creating conditions for the conservation, prosperity, increase in species diversity and the number of wild animals. The practical part of biotechnics is biotechnical measures — the direct creation of such conditions in nature. A very clear and complete description of those activities that relate to the field of biotechnics is given in the article by B. A. Kuznetsov, which will undoubtedly facilitate both practical work in the hunting economy and the preparation of reports, and will also help to identify the scope of work and the amount of costs in the field of truly biotechnical activities.
