May The Season Begin!

Our 2015 season kicks off next month! Just a taster of what to come is below.

The sun is shining making us feel within arms reach of summer. Our season kicks off next month and we’re getting a taste for sunny yoga mornings, mid afternoon ocean dips and cocktails on the beach.

We are really looking forward to our jam packed season on the beautiful Greek island of Skyros starting with our fantastic spring Rupert Brooke Retreat in May. This is not to be missed with a week of creative writing, poetry and music surrounded by colourful, bloomed flowers and the sun kissed beaches.

Our ever popular Atsitsa Bay kicks off at the start of June till late September with fantastic facilitators throughout the season. If you’re eager to try something new but don’t know where to start, Atsitsa Bay is the place. All of our courses are suitable for all levels so get stuck in and try your hand at: Cuban Salsa, Yoga, Windsurfing, Photography, Writing, Singing, Mindfulness, Meditation, 5-Rhythms, West African Dance, Massage, Reflexology, QiGong, Comedy, Mosaics, Abseiling, T’ai Chi, Watercolour painting, Theatre, Music, Trapeze and Public Speaking to name but a few! Choose up to three courses per week and participate in up to 5 hours per day for four days per week. Don’t worry, you can join in as much or as little as you like!

For those who know their niche, our Skyros Centre is offering Life Choices, Writers’ Lab and Art Studio throughout the height of the season from July through to early September. Whether you wish to start your novel, learn how to live creatively or paint your work of art then the Skyros Centre offers all you need. Book your desired course in advance to secure your place. Rupert Brooke - Commemorating the 100th Anniversary!

We are delighted to annouce our very special event devoted to the extraordinary poet, Rupert Brooke. This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the death of Rupert Brooke and his burial on Skyros. His presence caught the imagination of the Skyrians. Local women were said to go and mourn at his grave, and Brooke Square, dedicated to 'eternal poesie' was made by public subscription. The statue of 'an ideal poet' was funded by a Belgian philanthropist and unveiled in 1931.

Skyros Holidays continues the celebration of 'eternal poesie' to this day with its renowned Writers' Lab, and will celebrate Rupert Brooke in a special session from the 24th to 30th May, with poet Kevan Manwaring  and singer and artist Susie Self - both with their own connections to the Dymock Poets, of which Rupert Brooke was a part. They will be joined by DJ Mike Read, founder of The Rupert Brooke Society who will be offering readings from his latest biography as well as combining his music and your poetry. May is a beautiful time to be in Skyros with balmy weather and an abundance of flowers..

Atsitsa Bay . . .

On Atsitsa Bay holidays, choose your activities when you are there. Choose up to three courses per day for four days per week from a wide range of courses including: yoga, windsurfing, dance, art, comedy, music and much more. Atsitsa is full board and includes three delicious buffets a day for you to fill your boots!

This is a larger community-based holiday in a more remote location than the Skyros Centre. Right by the sea and in the arms of a magnificent pine forest, Atsitsa has a magical quality. Accommodation is mainly in rustic huts, situated in lush gardens of flowers and fruit trees. Accommodation in the house is limited and subject to availability.

This year we are introducing a number of brand new facilitators. Say hello to:

Sarah Jane Cramond with Circus Skills. This is Sarah Janes first season at Atsitsa, and she hopes to pass on her immense passion for circus and show every participant, that no matter your age you can always run away with the circus.

Claire Healy who will be bringing music to your ears. Claire Healy is an actor, musician and songwriter who has worked in many facets of theatre both in the UK, Ireland and Australia. Through a mixture of breath work, singing technique and exploring different songs, this workshop aims to release your true voice.

Kate Smurthwaite; stand-up comedian and political activist. She performs all over the UK and around the world at major clubs including The Comedy Store, Comedy Cafe, The Stand, Covent Garden Comedy Club, Soho Comedy Club and Crack Comedy Club. In 2013 she won a Three Weeks Editors Choice Award. Learn the skills and techniques employed by professional comedians to engage an audience, get them on your side and have them rolling in the aisles.

Celestine Walcott-Gordon is an eclectic soul artist with a velvet voice rich in emotion and experience far beyond her years influenced by some of the great singers of our time. Celestines recording and songwriting journey has seen her work with Gary Barlow (Take That), Cameron McVey (Nina Cherry) Roni Size, Diane Warren, Wayne Hector and Stargate (NeYo, Rihanna, Mary J Blige, Beyonce) to name but a few.

Saskia Bakayoko has been playing djembe, dancing and performing Internationally for 20 years. Saskia brings you wild West African Dance. Suitable for everyone, this course will consider the traditional dances of Guinea, Senegal and Mali, danced to the surging sounds of the djembe.

Stephen Clarke is an English writer living in Paris, which is just as pleasant as it sounds. He moved to France 20 years ago to take up a job in journalism. When writing about a place you have to make it your own. The people and things you choose to describe, and the way you describe them, must be yours and yours alone. The result might be a novel, a memoir, a screenplay, travel article or sonnet. It will be comic, tragic, or anything in between. But whatever you write, it needs to be you.

Cate Whittemore is a fine art painter, and a professional scenic artist, who has created scenery for movies, television, and theatre, including including “SPIDERMAN; Turn on the Dark” and the currently running Broadway hit “The Book of Mormon”, among many others. We will make daily forays to do watercolours on site, exploring and observing the natural beauty of Skyros and its people.

Tony Hawks is the author of the bestseller Round Ireland with a Fridge - the story of his absurd quest to hitch round the circumference of Ireland within a month... with a fridge. After being serialised on Radio 4, the book became a top 10 Sunday Times bestseller. Drawing on his own experience of having written several bestselling humorous books, Tony will use a variety of techniques to bring out the fun side in you. The focus will mainly be non fiction, but who knows where things may go....?
