FAQs for our holidays in Greece

Choice of Centre in Greece

What is the difference between the two holiday centres in Greece?

Atsitsa, surrounded by sea and pine forest, offers a wide range of courses and simple but comfortable accommodation. The focus is its community life. The Skyros Centre offers more specialised courses and higher accommodation standards. Life there is merged with that of the village. Both centres include yoga classes and options for massage treatments.

What is included in the session fee price?

In Atsitsa the price includes your shared accommodation, three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner), a choice of three courses, as well as drop-in courses and activities, and early morning yoga. At the Skyros Centre the session fee includes your chosen main course (Writers' Lab or Life Choices or Art Studio programme), twin shared accommodation, early morning yoga and breakfast and lunch.

Courses

How do I choose my courses and activities?

In Atsitsa, choose your courses once you're there on holiday.

For holidays at the Skyros Centre, book in advance for either the Life Choices or Writers' Lab or Art Studio programme. You can do this online or by telephone. There will be other one-off actvities and events open to all without booking in advance.

Are the courses suitable for beginners?

The courses are suitable for all levels. Our facilitators are experienced at teaching mixed level classes and all courses will be tailored to requirements.

What is the balance between free time and course time?

The programme in Atsitsa is designed for you to do as little or as much as you wish. Courses are available in the early morning (up to one hour), mid-morning (2 hours) and late afternoon (2 hours). Afternoon and pre-breakfast courses tend to be 'drop in'.

At the Skyros Centre courses run for 3 hours mid-morning and then there are optional activities available in the afternoon. Early morning yoga is also available.

Courses at Atsitsa Bay run for 4 days (in each half on a two week holiday) while courses at The Skyros Centre run for 5 days a week. The two week holidays include a 'weekend' for free time.

Accommodation

What are my accommodation options?

In Atsitsa, choose to stay in the house or in a hut in the abundant gardens of Atsitsa. The huts are simple, rustic and comfortable, just moments from the sea. There are shower and bathroom facilities in two areas on the site. Within the price, choose either shared accommodation in a 3 to 4 bedded room in the house or share a twin hut as most people choose to do. Upgrades to a twin share in the house with ensuite accommodation is available for £70 on a one week holiday and £130 on a two week holiday (subject to availability). Single hut upgrades are available for £125 per one week holiday and £235 per two week holiday (subject to availability).

At the Skyros Centre participants stay in rooms close to the Centre that combine modern comforts with a Skyrian ambience. Most are ensuite rooms or small apartments, all in keeping with the traditional and charming Greek design. The styles vary but most have air conditioning and a kettle as standard. Participants normally share a twin room. Single occupancy is available for a supplement of £175 per one week holiday and £325 per two week holiday.

General

Do I need to be of a certain age to join?

Not at all. All ages are represented, from 5 to 85 but approximately 70 percent of all our guests are aged 30 - 60.

What is the male/female ratio?

Generally there is a 60:40 or 70:30 split female to male, but on some sessions particularly in peak season, there is a more even balance. The Writers' Lab usually has quite an even split on all sessions.

Are vegetarians and other dietary requirements catered for?

We always offer a wonderful buffet style selection of food with fresh, natural and local ingredients, with meat or fish as well as vegetarian options. Please let us know when you book if you have any special dietary needs and we will do our utmost to accommodate you.

Is it okay to join a Skyros holiday on my own?

Definitely, we welcome a high number of solo travellers. Our holidays are designed with solo travellers in mind, which is why all of our session fee prices are twin share as standard. We pair people together who are of the same gender and about the same age. Over 70% of our clients are solo travellers and so you are always in good company if you come on your own. Couples, friends and families are, of course, welcome too.

Are there any beaches?

Atsitsa Bay has miles of stunning coastline to explore, with secluded coves, inlets, and beaches. The nearest place to swim is from the rocks just in front of the house. The nearest pebble beach a 5 - 7 minute walk away, and the nearest sandy beach, a 30 minute walk. There are no swimming pools. The bay is perfect for snorkelling. Atsitsa bay is clean and safe and usually very calm.

There are two long sandy beaches 10-15 minutes walk from The Skyros Centre. The large public beach has tavernas providing drinks, food and shade.

Can I bring my children?

We welcome children during the month of August at our Atsitsa Bay centre. Childcare provision is available in August for those aged 5 – 15 years and there are also courses that children may be able to take part in (subject to the agreement of the facilitator). Children aged between 5 and 15 receive a 50% discount off the session fee price.

Our transfer hotel is the Titania in central Athens.

In Atsitsa mobile phone coverage is extremely limited and it is unlikely that your phone will work there. There is a public phone box, however, just off site where you can call home and also numerous public phones in Skyros village. Mobile phones usually work in the village and at the Skyros Centre.

FAQs for our Cuba Holidays

Courses

I have some experience in Salsa already and so I'm not a beginner. Will my needs be met?

Yes, all participants will be paired with a Cuban dance partner and where needed, classes will be split into the required levels of proficiency in order to cater for all standards, from beginners to more advanced.

Transport

Will I be met at the airport?

If you take the designated flight with Virgin Atlantic there will be a free transfer from the airport to the Habana Libre hotel. If you are not on the designated flight, you will just need to take a taxi to the Habana Libre Hotel for around £15.

Accommodation

What accommodation options do I have?

Skyros-in-Cuba uses the famous 5-star Habana Libre hotel which is centrally located, offering breathtaking views of Havana and easy access to the eastern beaches. Its top floor is home to one of Havana's night clubs hosting top Cuban bands nightly.

Is the Cuban 5 star hotel standard similar to that of the British 5 star standard?

Yes, however due to the trade embargo, furnishings and facilities appear less modern, bathrooms slightly dated and in general things that we would take for granted, i.e. internet, may not be so easily accessible in Cuba.

Can I have a single room if I want one?

Yes, single upgrades are available for a supplement of £295.

General

I am a vegetarian and have other dietary requirements. Will I be able to find food in Cuba?

Yes, vegetarianism is in its infancy in Cuba but restaurants are always willing to please if asked. Cuban food is fairly plain which makes special diets easier to satisfy.

Can I change my money in advance?

No, you can only exchange currency to Cuban convertible pesos once in Cuba. This can be done at the airport, the hotel or any local bank.

If you have other questions about our holidays in Cuba please email us at office@skyros.com or chat with us on the website.

What can you tell me about the accommodation?

We use three different hotels for accommodation during this tour, starting at the Sunway Hotel in Phnom Penh a well-located 4 star city hotel. Next the group will travel to the Stung Sanke Hotel for three nights in Battambang. This is a 4 star Cambodian style hotel with a lovely rooftop swimming pool. Battambang has great charm, with a slow pace of life, vibrant markets and a mix of Khmer and colonial French architecture. Lastly, in Siem Riep the group stays in the very luxurious Sokka Angkor Resort hotel, which is a 5-star hotel with extensive facilities including a fitness centre, spa and salt-water pool with waterfalls.

Close to Angkor Wat and in walking distance to the town centre, the Sokka Angkor Resort has a range of restaurants, and a nightly Cambodian dance show. You will be accommodated in a deluxe pool view room for your four-night stay. This is followed by one more night at the Sunway Hotel. All hotels provide air-conditioned rooms, with ensuite facilities. We can arrange a single room for you at a supplement of £425 for the 10 days.

Travel

What travel arrangements do I need to make?

You will need to purchase international flights. No transfer is required. Leave the UK on the 26th January, to arrive on the 27th January into Phnom Penh and book a flight home on the 5th February 2014. Use the taxi rank outside the airport and take a taxi to the Sunway Hotel, the journey is around 20 minutes and costs around $6.

What should I do about my flights?

We would suggest that you contact The Flight Centre on 0113 243 4572 or East Travel on 01473 214305, they know about our holidays and will be able to advise you. The flight is around 13 hours directly, however, indirect flights will be more economical. Flight options include Thai Air, Air Asia, Korean Air, Bangkok Airways, China Airlines, Air France, Singapore Airlines, EVA Air and Etihad.

For UK nationals, a 30-day Cambodian visa must be obtained from the Royal Embassy of Cambodia at a cost of £15, or online at www.cambodianembassy.org.uk. Skyros highly recommends that you arrange this prior to your holiday. Online companies, such as Trail Finders Visa service, also offer this service for a fee. All passports must be valid for at least 6 months after your return date.

You will need to bring money for your evening meals, drinks, shopping and extra excursions. For these, we would recommend around £20 - £30 per day.
